Why do you need 8 hours of sleep at night?

The amount of sleep a human needs depends on many things, including their age. Infants sleep for at least 16 to 20 hours a day. As babies age, they require less sleep. By the time they reach adolescence, teenagers only need about 9 hours on average. And for most adults, 7 to 8 hours a night seems to be the best amount of sleep.

The amount of sleep a person needs also goes up if theyve missed sleep in previous days. We don't really adapt to getting less sleep than we need. We may get used to a schedule that keeps us from getting enough sleep, but our judgment, reaction time, and other functions will still be off.

There are few very common signs of sleep deprivation. Forgetfulness and lack of concentration are signs that you havent gotten enough sleep. Feeling sleepy during the day, especially during calm activities and falling asleep within 5 minutes of lying down also happens due to lack of sleep.

The effects of sleep deprivation can cause more problems than you think. It can weaken your immune system, affect your decision making skills, increase risk on conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, and obesity. It can lower your sex drive and raise your chances of falling sick.

Overeating and weight gain is one of the most common effects of sleep deprivation. Oversleeping and lack of sleep, at times, are core symptoms of depression. In case you dont have enough sleep, you may have a "sleep debt," which is similar to being overdrawn at a bank. Slowly, your body will demand you to start to repay the debt.

If you want to analyse and know how much sleep your body needs, begin by assessing your own individual needs and habits. See how you respond to different amounts of sleep. Happy sleeping, everyone!
