5 Health-Food Buzzwords And What They Mean

Although we are becoming more and more health conscious day by day, we are not really aware of nutrition lingo. This is one of the reasons that we get fooled by the marketing strategies of the food products. Here’s a list of the most common health food buzzwords:

Probiotic: Live bacterial cultures that we can consume naturally in unpasteurized fermented foods are known as probiotic foods. They’re believed to be beneficial to our overall health through their presumed ability to restore a proper balance to our guts.

Superfood: Although just a marketing term, “superfoods” are nutrient-dense foods that are often hailed as not only being beneficial to your health but also possessing the power to prevent or cure many diseases.

Gluten: Gluten is the general term for storage proteins found in certain cereal grains. If you don’t have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, there’s no real reason for you to avoid gluten. But the fact is that those who go on a gluten-free diet often cut out a lot of ultra-processed white, refined breads—which is great for weight loss and lowering inflammation.

Made With Real Fruit: Often mentioned on fruit juices or candies, this tag doesn’t benefit the body as much as an actual fruit does. In fact, fruit juice concentrates are high in fructose—a sugar molecule that our body turns into fat and inflammatory compound more easily than it does with glucose.

Organic: Organic foods are the ones that are grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified seeds. The cows that graze these lands are not treated with hormones or antibiotics. Researchers found that eating organic produce and meat reduces ingestion of pesticides and cuts your exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But you need to be careful because the term ‘organic’ has now become a marketing term and not all food products termed as ‘organic’ are real.
